The garden was created in 1552 by Prince Pier Francesco 'Vicino' Orsini and the great architect Pirro Ligorio under the name of 'Villa of the Wonders (Villa des Merveilles, Park der Wunder). Situated in a wooded valley bottom beneath the castle of Orsini, it is populated by grotesque larger-than-life sculptures, some sculpted in the bedrock, and small buildings located among the natural vegetation. The park of Bomarzo was intended not to please, but to astonish. It has inspired many famous painters, writers and poets. Abandonned for centuries it became at the end of the 20th century, after a restoration program, a major tourist attraction. 2020.

alb3616983 Small Birds on a Willow Branch and Hibiscus Blossoms. Artist: Tsubaki Chinzan (Japanese, 1801-1854). Culture: Japan. Dimensions: Image: 43 3/8 x 17 1/2 in. (110.2 x 44.4 cm)Overall: 75 3/8 x 30 3/8in. (191.5 x 77.2 cm). Date: dated Fall 1850.Chinzan was raised in Edo in a samurai family. He trained under the Nanga painters Tani Buncho (1763-1840) and Watanabe Kazan (1793-1841) and favored Chinese literati artists of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Specializing in paintings of birds and flowers, he was an avid participant in sencha tea ceremonies, during which he would enjoy viewings of Chinese paintings and antiquities owned by his associates. He enhanced this painting with a poem that alludes to a passage from the "Song of Everlasting Sorrow" by the Tang dynasty (618-906) poet Bai Juyi (772-846). In it, Chinzan imagines the moon shining on the face of Lake Taiye and wonders if someone, a person he does not directly identify, still dances in the heavens in the deep of night. As the crisp autumn air of the west wind awakens him from his musings, he finds he can still smell her fragrance on the dew. In the original poem, the emperor discovers that, after the tragic death of his beautiful love, Yang Guifei, the hibiscus by Lake Taiye reminds him of her face, while the willows at Weiyang Palace recall her eyebrows. In this way, the contemporary poem and painting are brought together by the ancient text. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3633574 The Triumph of Nature Over Art (design for an engraving of 'De Florum Cultura'). Artist: Pietro da Cortona (Pietro Berrettini) (Italian, Cortona 1596-1669 Rome). Dimensions: 7 13/16 x 5 11/16in. (19.9 x 14.5cm). Date: ca. 1633.This drawing by the Baroque master Pietro da Cortona is a design for one of the illustrations in a treatise on gardening written by the Jesuit professor, Giovanni Battista Ferrari (1584-1655). The book, titled 'De Florum Cultura' (Rome, 1633), published this design engraved in reverse by Johann Friedrich Greuter (1590-1662). The artist illustrated an allegorical passage in Ferrari's text that tells of a contest between Nature and Art. Art, kneeling at the right with grafting knife in hand, has produced a rosebush with flowers of three colors, but Flora is about to crown Nature, who stands pointing at the miracle of her own doing. As if by magic a Chinese rose tree has sprung from the ground. Vertumnus dances, holding a sistrum aloft, and three boys -- Lucifer, Meriggio, and Hesper -- circle the tree while its flowers change from white, to pink, to scarlet, as they are said to do in the course of a day. The boys are identified respectively by a lily branch, a rose, and a bleeding heart, and which allude to Dawn, Noon, and Evening. The wonders of Nature are seen to be more marvelous than those of Art. Drawings by Pietro da Cortona for other illustrations in Ferrari's book are in the Peter and Nellie de Boer Collection, Amsterdam (Cybele before the Council of the Gods), and in the Museo del Prado, Madrid (An Allegorical Scene with the heraldic Barberini Bees; repr. Blunt and Cooke, 1960, p. 76 fig. 57). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3608351 The Prodigal Son Kneeling Repentant among Swine. Artist: Salvator Rosa (Italian, Arenella (Naples) 1615-1673 Rome). Dimensions: 15-1/4 x 10-15/16 in. (38.7 x 27.8 cm). Date: 1615-73.Painter, draftsman, etcher, poet, actor, wit, satirist, and social-climber, Salvator Rosa was without doubt one of the most colorful and temperamental personalities of the seventeenth-century art world. Landscape-rugged and wild rather than pastoral or arcadian-always had a central place in his oeuvre. Unlike Dughet, Claude, and other contemporaries, however, Rosa was inspired not by the seductive, mute shadows of the ancient world that lingered in the ruins strewn across the Roman countryside, but rather by the natural landscape's more tempestuous aspect-what he described in a letter of 1662 as its "terrific beauty" and "savage wildness." It is no wonder that Rosa's sensibility has always been considered proto-Romantic. This drawing is a study for a painting by Rosa, Prodigal Son Herding Swine, executed in the early 1650s (State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg: see Farina 2012). Although it depicts a biblical parable, the composition might easily be mistaken for a rustic swineherd tending his flock. The towering tree is as much a subject as the kneeling figure, reflecting the importance Rosa accorded to landscape, not only as a subject in its own right, as in his heroic landscape paintings and drawings, but also as an expressive setting for sacred and mythological compositions. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
